General Santos City- The heart of SOX

What's very interesting about the Philippines is that every province is unique from the other. There are provinces that are so high up in the mountain that it has a cooler climate, there are places filled with white sand beaches that are perfect for summer getaways. Now, as one province is different from the other, which also goes to one city is distinct from another makes the culture and the way of living of each group different  and very diverse.

In my previous articles, my intent really is to introduce to you local tourist destinations that are still in its enfacy when it comes to tourism. Most travellers back in the days consider going to places that are known to the majority. In addition, I am personally from the South, the Southernmost part so top speak, that is why these articles,  really, means a lot to me as I am showcasing the beauty of SOCCSKSARGEN. I have introduced to you Sarangani, the province where I am born, the majestic South Cotabato, the rich history of Cotabato mostly known as North Cotabato and ancient caves of Sultan Kudarat. With pride and honor, I will take you down to General Santo City-The City of Champions.

General Santos City is named after the pioneer who started the settlement of the people that are mostly Christian Filipino migrants. This pioneer also developed the Korondal Valley that started during the middle of the 1930s. This pioneer is no other than General Paulino Santos.

General Santos is formerly known as Buayan, not until 1954 when it was renamed after the pioneer. Located at the top of Sarangani Bay of the Celebes Sea in South Cotabato, General Santos is one of the most active cities in the fishing industry among the cities in Mindanao. Over time, the city flourished into a shipping point, mainly with their prime produces such as fishes like tuna, of course, as well as pineapple, banana, and cassava. This just proves the fact that General Santos city is not only offering opportunities in the fishing industry but also in the farming industry. Safe to say, General Santos is one of the top agricultural cities in the Philippines.

Proudly represents the Philippines as the Tuna Capital of the country, the city is so famous for the number of fisheries and its fishing ports. I remembered visiting General Santos City Fish Port back in the days, those gigantic fishing boats, men that are so busy unloading huge tuna's such as Blue Marlins into the shore. Now, that's just 1 reason to pack your bag and head to GenSan, I will give you more reason to do so.

Several known personalities nationally and internationally had their humble beginnings deep-rooted in this small town. Gensan is proud of its prominent individuals like Gerald Anderson, and Melai Canteveros, now well-known celebrities, who were once awarded “Big Winners” of the first seasons of the National TV program Pinoy Big Brother.

2011 Ms. Universe 3rd Runner Up, Shamcey Supsup; world-renowned boxers like Rolando Navarette, Nonito Donaire, and of course, Sen. Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. These are only a few of the most notable that keep Gensan’s hail, “Home of the Champions.” Their achievements have become part of Gensan’s History, significantly impacting the City’s Travel and Tourism sector.
